Abstract

Most of drugs were metabolized and extruded by both the
liver and the kidney. The liver is the first to showing the
manifestations of the drug toxicity. The aim of this work was done to
compare the effect of administration of the haloperidol drug at
(Zero-day) before incubation and at the (5-day) first week of incubation
, to get an idea about the extent of the teratogenic effect of this drug
on the developing liver. So that morphological and histological studies
were done on the liver of 8- and 16-days old chick embryos treated with
(0,25 mg\ egg) of haloperidol on the (zero and 5-th days) of incubation.
Haloperidol induced retardation of growth of the developing liver of
8-day treated chick embryo . The sign of retardation was investigated in
the treated liver of chick embryos which injection at the (zero day)
more than which injected at (5-th days) of incubation . The toxic
effects of the drug was seen also more at 16-days treated chick embryos
. And the drug induced hepatic degeneration at both 8- and 16-days
treated liver with focal areas of necrosis. The conclusion from this
study was the haloperidol drug has dangerous effects on tissues for this
study point , and with powerful toxicity on the cells , because the drug
stay for long time in the tissues specially brain and liver . and the
effect induced by the drug depend on time of administration .
Key words: antidepressant drug, haloperidol, chick embryo,
degeneration, retardation.
